terabient: (PSO2: Lutheruna)
I know it's common to associate songs with characters and ships but I've not done that personally for a long time. A lot of it comes down to the fact that my musical tastes tend towards light and cheerful dance pop while my fictional preferences are sad gay morally grey pretty boys getting in terrible relationships, which isn't the most natural fit for fanmix things.

BUT!!! yesterday I was listening to a kpop ballad, Red Velvet's One of these Nights and when it got to this verse I screamed internally because OMG IT'S LUTHERUNA. THESE ARE THE FEELINGS THIS SHIP IS MEANT TO EVOKE!! An all too brief moment of joy in incalculably long lives, the significance of which is not fully grasped until long after is it gone... 😭 I had a moment for sure.

In the same time span, just for a minute
In the same space, stay for a minute
In that short moment, everything
Stops for us, in that moment
Why did we not know that was a miracle?

Full lyrics + music video under the cut, along with some song history, if you would like to wallow in the feels with me :') )

I've wanted to do some general character/pairing analysis lately--to go over the emotions, conflicts, and themes I see as central to understanding them--so idk maybe you'll see some more "image songs" posted about my faves while I plug away at kinkfic. or not! i really shouldn't keep making work for myself like this ;p

Worked pretty late today, so this #musicmonday entry will be pretty short and has nothing to do with the Asian pop scene for once.

Magda Giannikou is a Grecian tv and film composer who pivoted to performance after 1. Discovering her grandmother's accordion, and 2. Finding she had a knack for writing lyrics...in French. Her debut song, Amour, T'es là? / Love, where are you? is a buoyant, playful tune showcasing a remarkable mix of disparate musical influences--bossa nova, French pop, Greek folk, and a lot of accordion.

She also performed this song live with Snarky Puppy, a popular and prolific jazz fusion band. It's an excellent performance all around--worth listening to even if you're not all that into accordions. :p

For today's Music Monday, I'll reminisce about a jpop idol who debuted to wild success, released a string of equally successful albums, and ended her career because....well, I'll get into that later.

Melody Ishikawa, better known by her stylized stage name melody., is a Japanese-American singer born in Hawaii. Discovered by one of Japan's most successful record producers while she was in high school, Melody completed her education before moving to Japan at 19 to pursue a singing career. After being attached to several girl group projects that fizzled out, melody. eventually debuted a solo artist and saw immediate success. Her first album, Sincerely, had four singles peak in the top 40 of the Oricon charts. melody.'s songs feature an effortless mix of Japanese and English lyrics, and a joyful, upbeat dance-pop sound.

My personal favorites from Sincerely are So Into You, and a dance-pop cover of Over The Rainbow. As my college radio show was scheduled for Tuesday and Friday evenings, I liked to end with one of these infectiously cheerful tracks during the long winter months--it felt like a way to give a bit of brightness to whoever might be wandering the campus during broadcast hours. ♥

The following years saw melody. release two more albums, Be as One and READY TO GO!, and her most successful single, Realize, which was also the theme song for j-drama Dragon Zakura.

In 2008 melody. released her final studio album, Lei Aloha. Meant to be a reflection of melody.'s life in Hawaii as a child, the songs on Lei Aloha tend towards softer ballads with understated string and piano arrangements. The sole single, Haruka ~Haruka~ was the ending theme song for Daisuki!!, a tender j-drama about a severely disabled woman trying to raise a child after the death of her husband.

After Lei Aloha melody. abruptly retired from the music business, citing a desire to work in fashion design. However, a year later, she announced her marriage to guitarist Miyavi, which is likely the real motivation for her sudden exit.

Of course, it's not uncommon for Asian pop idols to retire when their marriage becomes public but it always hurts to see a successful female performer to completely stop releasing new material. OTOH....Melody did marry perhaps the greatest Japanese guitarist of all time and a global rock icon so you know what? Get it, girl.

It's musicmonday again, so if you'll indulge me I'll wax about another 2000s-era Asian pop hit 😌

You may have heard of Lights, the theme song of the puzzle/rhythm game Lumines. Composed by Shinichi Osawa of Mondo Grosso fame, it was also the debut of singer and lyricist Nobuchika Eri, whose demo tape won Sony's "Gonna be A Star" competition, even though she had forgotten to write her address on her application. (The audition president eventually tracked her down.) Though only in high school at the time of her discovery, Eri's voice had a rich maturity and boldness atypical of many young jpop performers.

Lights, with its inclusion in Lumines, introduced Nobuchika Eri to a global audience. It's how I first heard her music: playing Lumines on a borrowed PSP in a Boston area arcade while waiting to play the one DDR machine in the place. (The man who lent me his PSP also made fun of my poor playing, after which I returned it and never spoke to him again.)

ANYWAY. Nobuchika Eri's first album, nobuchikaeri released a whole year after her Lights single. It's one of my favorite albums ever--pairing Eri's lush, emotional vocals with Shinichi Osawa's acid jazz/EDM inspired arrangements create a truly singular sound.

Unfortunately, it's a collaboration that's never been repeated--after nobuchiaeri's release, both musicians left Sony Music. Since then, Eri has done some work with NAOTO of Orange Road and released two mini-albums, hands and III - THREE. Both albums have pared down instrumentals heavy on piano and acoustic guitar, giving Eri's powerful voice center stage, and while I wouldn't call either bad the songs lack the identity and pop of nobuchikaeri. I honestly struggle to remember any tracks from either album, despite listening to them multiple times.

The exception is Eri's cover of Woman "Wの悲劇"より. One of the most beloved pop ballads of the Showa era, this song about a love affair approaching a tragic end is a perfect fit for Eri's emotional styling.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading, and I hope I've lead you to some new music you can enjoy. ♥

It's Music Monday, it's my last day on break, and I feel like chatting about my college radio show some more, so get ready to learn about one of kpop's most successful solo acts, Lee Hyori.

Lee Hyori's career began as the lead singer of the 1st generation idol group FIN K.L. The single Rose was included in Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix Korean version, which is how I discovered their music: in a tiny arcade beneath Fenway that is now closed.

Anyway! Lee Hyori left FIN.K.L for a solo career, and immediately became A Big Fuckin Deal. The single 10 minutes from her debut album was a tremendous success, and also serves an ideal example of early 2000s global pop scene: an addictive blend of hip-hop and dance beats, (the BREAK at 2:42 👌 ) provocative dancing and lyrics, and an entire closet of designer brand looks in one video. Of all the music I played on the show, 10 minutes was the most reliable at getting people to stop by the station and ask about the song.

Unfortunately, Lee Hyori's early years were plagued by controversies. She was criticized for her limited vocal range, and her song producers were frequent plagiarists of international hip-hop and RnB hits. Eventually Lee Hyori apologized for her complicity in plagiarism and took a hiatus from the industry, although she continued to work as a show host and entertainment columnist. Although still controversial, people now complained about her animal rights activism, support for worker's rights, and her criticisms of the impossible standards demanded of female performers.

Not surprisingly, when Lee Hyori returned to performing her music reflected her shift to social rights. Miss Korea is a jazzy track with lyrics that highlight how a cultural obsession with beauty erases the real beauty of all women. She has also taken a more direct role in composing and writing her own songs. Black, the title track of her most recent album, has a country/rock influence that is wildly different from the music of her early career, but is still recognizably "Hyorish."

If you've read this far, thank you for listening to me ramble about one of my favorite Asian performers. I hope you enjoy Lee Hyori's music at least a little bit.

Bonus songlist: When I first posted this on Misskey, I cut a few tracks due to length. That's not really an issue here, so here's some extra recs for you!

Hey Girl, from Lee Hyori's debut album and another track with powerful 2000s vibes. It's less catchy than 10 minutes but the music video hilariously demonstrates many of the...less artistic qualities of pop music. Nearly all the comments on this vid are along the lines of "she was my first love" or raving about Hyori's outfits. (The pink angora dress & beret combo in particular is a favorite.) Not included because it's kinda mid if I'm being objective, but definitely doesn't hurt to check out that pink angora dress. ;)

Anymotion, an absolute monster hit produced for Samsung's Anycall flip phone. The ad campaign featuring this song was crucial in Samsung's pivot to a trend-setting brand, and the "stage mix" video linked highlights Lee Hyori's peerless dance skills--not that any performer can afford to be a mediocre dancer in the kpop scene, but even in such rarefied air Hyori's joyously sexual dancing is a cut above any kpop star I've seen.

a story about work )

I spent the morning getting an oil change then doing one out of three hampers of laundry. The two I didn't finish are the ones destined for the donation bins; they've been in storage for years and I'm under the assumption that they're full of yuck and empty of clothing anyone actually wants, but I haven't actually looked too deeply into the hampers. I did today and discovered a number of non-clothing items (just plastic...stuff???? didn't look too closely) so I'll have to *sigh* go through them and toss out all the not-clothing stuff before bringing them to the laundromat. OH WELL. It will be good to have the extra space for all of a day before it gets filled up with more stuff from some other corner of the house no one is using.

Still haven't gotten around to cleaning the house! :T

To end, a couple of interesting game music tracks to consider:

J-E-N-O-V-A, arranged in Mario Paint Composer Looking up Mario Paint composer arrangements of other video game tunes is one of my favorite niche past times; this J-E-N-O-V-A arrange is remarkably close to the original, and uses the "dog bark" note in lieu of timpani. The addition of dogs is always an upgrade, so in some ways this is an improvement on the original piece! :P

Metal Gear Solid theme, arranged for the Gameboy Color Things that will never stop amusing me: the fact that a Gameboy Color port of Beatmania exists; the fact that the Metal Gear Solid theme is a playable track--complete with video overlay!--in said GBC port.

Aquatic Ambiance, re-arranged by Masashi Hamauzu To end on a very different note, here's a beautiful re-arrangement of the Aquatic Ambiance track from Donkey Kong Country. Hamauzu says he was really happy to work on this track, which isn't surprising since it features the atmospheric, chromatic harmonies that he favors in his own compositions. Also: piano and violin solos! ♥

I haven't played Transistor - in fact, I hadn't even heard of it until a week ago - but damn, the reveal trailer song (We All Become) is faaaaaaabulous. Like I may just buy the game because of that song alone. Well, that, and the main character looks wicked awesome.

so yeah that's all

Resident Evil 6 added a bunch of new content this month. One of the new modes is a versus game called 'Onslaught.' It's like...Mercenaries mode crossed with Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon. You and your opponent run around a map killing zombies, trying to keep a combo chain going, but when your chain drops you send the number of zombies you killed over to your opponent's map. If your combo chain hits 30, you automatically dump 30 zombies on your opponent and your combo resets. The first person who dies loses. :P I haven't played it much, but it's pretty fun.

It also has some weird background music.

Cut for video )

On the subject of music, I have not yet heard the ungodly awful Christmas Shoes anywhere so far. Of course, by saying that I've probably ruined everything and it'll be on repeat at my mom's Christmas party tomorrow or something equally horrible.

I spent most of today cleaning the house. On one hand, I'm pretty proud of the newly-shiny kitchen counter and empty sink. On the other hand, there is still a lot of work to be done and ugh i don't want to dooooooooooo eeeeeeeeeet tomorrow. /whine

I finished the kitchen a lot later than I expected (partially because I got distracted by silly interwebs things, whoops) so today's entry is going to be pretty short. Thank goodness for the 30 Days music meme that I still haven't finished! :P

I had a nine hour clinical today! It was exhausting and I never want to do it again but I have another one tomorrow. At least it will be the last one I have to do.

My initial plan for today's post was to continue with my play through of Resident Evil 6 and go all tl;dr about the third chapter in Chris' campaign. I got through roughly 4 paragraphs before losing all will to continue. But I should have it all finished for tomorrow's post. I AM SURE YOU CAN HARDLY CONTAIN YOUR EXCITEMENT.

This still leaves me with no topic for today's post! I briefly thought about real life, but mine is intensely boring right now, so that's out.

But then I remembered I still haven't finished the 30 day music meme. Which, for the record, I started in 2010. Finishing things on time: I can't.

so

LET'S GET SOME SONGS IN DIS DREAMWIDTH

day 25: a song that makes you laugh: Business Time by Flight of the Conchords )

day 26: a song that you can play on an instrument: Carol of the Bells )

day 27: a song that you wish you could play: Shut The Club Down by Girl Talk )

Since finishing Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I've fallen completely in love with it.

Anyway, I'm starting this a bit late, so screw an introduction - here's a bunch of fanmade remixes of some of the fantastic music from the series. For those who haven't seen Madoka, the original version of each song is listed first...partially in the hopes that the awesomeness will entice you to watch the series. ;)

Be aware that you will probably be weeping buckets by the end! ;o;

And just because, here's a video that will only make sense if you've seen Madoka's last episode and a certain Japanese drink commercial.

So, I've yet to compete a 30-day meme. I may never finish one, but they are handy to have around on days when you can't think of anything in particular to address...

First up, a few questions from this long-abandoned music meme...

day 23: a song that you want to play at your wedding: The Days of Wine and Roses )

day 24: a song that you want to play at your funeral: Pump Up The Jam by Technotronic )

The rest of the meme )

Internet access was down again today, from about 7am until 8pm. The local news reports also mentioned that people were experiencing sporadic power outages, apparently because there were some cases where already repaired power lines had to be temporarily disconnected in order to fix other ones...?

I honestly think that at this point, Snoctober has been handled worse than the 2010 ice storm, and in the ice storm everything was covered in thick unmelting ice. I think this may be the time I can use the phrase 'epic failure' without it being hyperbolic in the least. :P

Also, trying to find a way around the power and internet issues has made NaBloPoMo less fun than it could be. At least things are becoming more stable now...anyway, it's PROMPTIEM!

Can you listen to music and write?

Hmmm, it depends on both the music and what I'm trying to write. If I'm writing something like a blog post or journal entry (my SUPERSEEKRIT handwritten journal, I mean :) then I honestly need music to kind of um...I guess entice me to stay in one place? If I don't have some music in the background, it's much easier for me to get distracted by something else and wander off. Music has a way of making a little safe bubble for me where I can get informal writing done.

However, when I try to write fiction, or an essay, or any sort of formal composition, I have to work in silence. I have tried writing with music on but I find that instead of keeping me on task, the music becomes a distraction instead - especially if lyrics are involved. Occasionally, when I have a specific mood I hope to achieve, I will put on instrumental music that evokes the ideal mood, but never anything with lyrics.

I can't think of a specific thing I've written that came about as a response to lyrics or music in general, although I wouldn't be surprised to find that I have written a story based on a song and have just forgotten it. x_x

What song did you hear today?

Well. Um. I would think that most people, myself included, have heard more than one song today... :P

But right now I'm listening to this track from the game Resonance of Fate. It seems particularly suited to chilly, clear nights (the name may have something to do with it):

so today i got a friend request on Shelfari from some dude next to what looks like a Kannon statue, with this note:

This is an Invitation to a New Life. You are invited to live active lives that embrace laughter and lightheartedness. You are invited to breathe new light into your life by accessing the love and wisdom within. You are invited to pursue personal growth as you live consciously and creatively. You are invited to invigorate the soul by discovering who you are. You are invited to the Beauty of Now! RSVP with Love!

i checked out his profile and it seems like he is only sending friend requests to young ladies - a great volume of young ladies. I AM SUSPICIOUS OF THE TYPE OF LOVE YOU ARE DISCUSSING, MR. MAN, AND WILL RSVP WITH DISTRUST!

okay now that's out of the way let's do some more music meme stuffs

day 20: a song that you listen to when you’re angry: 99 Anthems by DJ Minty Fresh Beats )

day 21: a song that you listen to when you’re happy: Over the Rainbow by melody. )

does anyone actually listen to these things? like, i know only end up listening to maybe half of the music posted on my flist. it's not an intentional thing, it's just that i'm a loser who likes to stay within my musical comfort zone for the most of the time so if something sounds like it will be really different, i skip it. i do have a bookmarks folder full of stuff i mean to give a whirl when i am in one of my musically adventurous moods, but the number of songs and artists in that folder is far greater than my capacity to listen to them all.

does anyone else have the same problem, especially when the music being pushed is from a genre you don't listen to often, or don't particularly like? as much as i like to think i am a ~generous and open~ listener, i'm a lot more likely to click on something that's cutesy or dance bubblegum pop, old-style soul and jazz, or r & b, while avoiding just about everything with the word 'rock' in it - even if it's been given a glowing and detailed review by someone's whose taste i trust. tolerance? i spit on your (musical) tolerance.

whatevs, here's a post that has some awful music in it and some fantastic music in it.

day 17: a song that you hear often on the radio: Tik-Tok by Ke$ha )

day 18: a song that you wish you heard on the radio: I Am Trying To Break Your Heart by JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound )

day 19: a song from your favorite album: Billie Jean by Michael Jackson )

for a few hours today, i thought i was going to miss today's post because of my ~COMCASTIC~ connection, but luckily everything was (apparently) fixed fifteen minutes ago. score? it's good it's working again, but it's still comcast. :c

i feel like talking about muziks today, so let's dust off ye olde 30 day meme that, true to my word, i did not do in 30 days. to be honest i stopped mostly because of the "Pick a song that describes you" day. i hate those kind of questions because it is pretty much impossible to pick something that doesn't make you sound like a huge fucking hipster douchebag. even if you picked something totally innocuous like Bananaphone, you still picked a tired old meme song - only the biggest of douchebags do something like that. THERE IS NO WINNING.

but today i have tried.

day 15: a song that describes you: Really Very Small by Esperanza Spalding )

day 16: a song that you used to love but now hate: That's the Way Love Goes by Janet Jackson )

i suppose i'll do this whenever the mood to blather on about music hits me.

okay, i have no idea what to post for today, so here is a video about Toronto.

WHITE VEGAAAAAAAAAS!

ALSO! i got Cee Lo Green's The Lady Killer album and it is wonderful. I am toooooo stupified from headaches to gush about it properly, so i'll just say that if you've heard 'Fuck You' or its terribly sanitized radio version 'Forget You,' every single song is JUST as fabulous.

this is my favorite track if you need some convincing :)

will try to put more effort into this tomorrow~

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I had a really hard time with this one - there are a lot of covers I prefer over the originals, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call them better. The covers that I like listening to are the ones that do something completely different in sound and interpretation when compared to the original, and I feel picking one over the other is...missing the point.

For a cover to be better than the original song, I think it needs to keep close to the original version in arrangement and interpretation while surpassing it in technical performance. Basically, it does what the original did (or wanted to do) but...better. Obvious, but many covers are intentionally performed with the idea of answering, changing or rebutting the intent of the original song. The quality of the new version is tied to the old one in a way that makes it hard to choose one over the other.

Anyway, the point of that pretentious verbal vomit is to say: Mary J. Blige's cover of Stevie Wonder's Overjoyed knocks Stevie's version out of the park.

The thing is, the MJB version is practically identical to the Stevie Wonder version. She just sings it so much better. Part of it is that the song as-is plays very well to Mary J's vocal strengths, but also...the Stevie Wonder version is just too sweet and syrupy to be more than pleasant background music. There's something in Mary J Blige's voice that makes me feel like she's gone through absolute hell just before coming into the absolute best time of her life through the song. The Stevie Wonder version, by contrast, sounds like he's going from 'okay' to 'yay!' which is....nice.

Another cover I really enjoy (though I hesitate to call it better) is Raphael Saadiq's version of The Spinners' It's A Shame. I absolutely adore both versions of this song - I think they both showcase the best qualities of 70's soul - but I lean towards Raphael Saadiq's cover a little more. I think part of it might just be because it's NEW AND SHINY, but more seriously, the increased prominence of the bass and the clarity of Saadiq's voice (particularly in the lower registers) makes the song pop in the way the Spinners' version doesn't.

Also I might have a huge, embarrassing music crush on Raphael's voice/bass playing skills, and unashamedly love any and everything he does. ^___^;;

Whatever, I'll just post both versions and let y'all decide which is better. :D

Just in time for my not-at-all serious deadline, again! I feel mildly accomplished!
