Because I'm bored and can't get to sleep, have a music meme.

1. What are you listening to right now?
The Peacocks, Esperanza Spalding

2. What song(s) make(s) you sad?
A whole bunch. Uh, off the top of my head...Thank You...For Everything, Joe Hisaishi, Apple Blossom, Esperanza Spalding, and Pieces of A Man, Gil Scott-Heron.

3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
Uhhh. Anything by Creed or Sugar Ray.

4. Your all time favorite band?
Hmmm...I've never gotten tired of Jamiroquai, and I started listening to them when Travelling Without Moving was released which was...at some point in the 90s. I remember MTV was still airing music videos at the time.

5. Your newly discovered band is?
He's not a band, but Jake Shimabukuro (he performed a ukulele cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody) is someone I only recently started listening to. His music is pretty fun!

6. Best female voice?
Erykah Badu has a unique, lovely voice that's reminiscent of Billie Holiday, but now, I'd go with Janelle Monae. Her range is incredible and she puts a lot of emotion into her songs.

7. Best male voice?
Raphael Saadiq. His voice could make angels jealous. :p

8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
In order: Dance pop, R&B, jazz.

9. What do you listen to, to hype you up?
I have a lot of happy hardcore/eurobeat that mostly gets played when I'm driving down the highway.

10. What do you listen to when you want to calm down?
Older jazz...stuff by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck.

11. Last gig/concert you went to?
Uhhh. I know the last time I went out to dinner with my sister there was a really shitty band playing really shitty covers of mostly shitty songs. I don't remember the band's name, but I guess I could just refer to them as Shit Band.

12. Band you find yourself listening to the most right now?
I haven't removed Janelle Monae's The ArchAndroid album from my CD rotation since I got it. That was last year. I think I've listened to a song from it at least once every day.

13. Most hated band?
They're not my most hated, but I find Kings of Leon incredibly awful and annoying.

14. Song that makes you think?
Mondo Grosso's Star Suite. It's not like, super deep or anything, but it's enjoyable and the way the 'story' progresses is interesting.

15. Band that you think the world should love as much as you do?
I think everyone should at least try to listen to Gil Scott-Heron's Pieces of a Man album. The first time I heard it, it was like getting punched in the gut. You know, in a good way. Plus, now you'll know where The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is about. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, right?

16. Coolest music video?
NOTHING WILL EVER BEAT THRILLER. EVER.

17. Music video with the most babe watch?
I have no idea. I remember a Shinichi Osawa video that was kinda dirty but the name escapes me.

18. What do you play/would you play in the bedroom to spice things up?
Sandstorm! That's sexy, right?

But seriously, playing music prior to/during ~lovemaking~ totally gets me out of the mood. I guess if I had to, Marvin Gaye would be a good choice.

19. Can you play a musical instrument?
I can sing. And play Carol of the Bells on the xylaphone.

20. Ever been in a mosh pit?
Just once. I wouldn't do it again.

21. Are you in a band?
no

23. Ever dated a musician?
...quite a few, actually.

28. Do you wish yourself that you were a musician?
Sometimes. I miss being in a chorus, a little bit, but I haven't felt brave enough to sing in groups or in front of people for a while now.

29. Best chick band you know of?
UUHHHH. I liked B4U when they were still together.

31. Last song that you heard on the radio?
In the car I heard a pretty awful pop-country song. Didn't catch the name since I changed it pretty fast. :p

32. What do you think of Classical music?
I like some of it, especially the Romantic and Impressionist composers. I have listened and performed more opera than I would like, and I avoid it as much as possible - which is pretty easy, thankfully.

33. What do you think of Country music?
I like older country. It tends to be hilarious or unbelievably sad. The pop-country music most stations play today needs to die in a fire.

34. What do you think of Death metal?
I don't think I've ever listened to it, and I'm happy keeping it that way.

35. Last BIG band that you saw live?
Stereopony at Anime Boston 2011 (yeah, I know, huge nerd.)

36. Are you a groupie?
no

37. Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
I had a college radio show that played nothing but Asian pop. So: yes.

38. What famous musician would you like to “spend the night with”!?
The first name that came to mind was Rihanna. But I don't think she'd be interested :(

Maybe Nicki Minaj?

39. Worst concert moment?
Mosh pits are pretty bad when you're small. And, uh, I've been groped a few times. Actually, a lot. :(

40. Funny concert moment?
One of my friends was the DJ at a club, and a bunch of us went carrying like, a billion glow sticks and necklaces and stuff because it was like a pretend rave. ANYWAY we were all smashed and we tried to dance while waving around our neon glowy crap, but we just ended up smacking each other in the face. And falling. IT WAS PRETTY GREAT.

41. Sad concert moment?
I can't think of any.

42. Best local act you can think of?
New Hampshire has zero worthwhile acts. ZERO.

43. If you were a musical instrument what would you be?
People have described my singing voice as flute and bell-like, so there you go. A flute or a bell.

44. Do you listen to the radio?
I listen to NPR while driving and Pandora at home (if Pandora counts). Sometimes I listen to stuff on digitally imported.

45. Do you watch music TV?
Does it even exist any more?

46. Do you follow the music charts, like the top 40?
not at all!

47. Have you met any famous musicians?
I said hello to Yuki Kaijura and Nobuo Uematsu when they came to Anime Boston. That's about it.

48. Are any of your friends/family/etc. musicians?
My brother is a music performance major at UMass Amherst - his main instrument is the saxophone, but he can play the clarinet, flute and piano as well, and probably some other things I can't remember. My sister's a vocalist, my aunt plays the guitar and sings, I have cousins who play the piano and guitar, my friend Hollie graduated from Berklee with a degree in composition, plays the trombone, piano and sings, and over half the people I know I met in either bands or choral groups.

So uh, I guess I know a lot of musical people.

49. Song that best describes your feelings right now?
It's not really a song, but...Where Did the Night Go, Gil Scott-Heron.

50. Song that describes your life?
I cannot think of a single one.

51. Do you know the names of all the band members that you listen to?
Hells no.

52. Does a musician’s physical attractiveness play a role in the music that you listen to?
Not particularly. But, I don't think I listen to anyone who qualifies as ugly, so...

53. What famous musician do you want to marry?
Anyone? No one? Lupe Fiasco and Nicki Minaj were the first names that came to mind. ^o^;

53. Favorite movie sound track?
Hana-bi's soundtrack is devastatingly sad and beautiful.

55. Any musician pet hates?
I kind of want to punch Bono in the face for being a self-righteous douchebag. And his music is mediocre.

56. What do your parents listen to?
My mother listens to Christian pop. My dad likes country and bands from the 60s and 70s, but he's not a huge fan of the Beatles.

57. What are you listening to right NOW?
Telephone, Erykah Badu

58. Do you wear band etc T-shirts?
Nope.

59. Do you cook to music?
Occasionally.

60. Do you sing in the toilet?
No. But I have been known to sing Days of Wine and Roses in the shower. :)

That was unnecessarily long. TL;DR: Gil Scott-Heron is somebody you should listen to, and jazz is awesome.
