E3

terabient: Pokemon having a tea party :3 (Pokemon: Tea time!)
I had THE WORST headache in the past few days, so I gave up on my post-once-a-day schedule. I don't get headaches too often so I turned into a big weepy baby for awhile, but now it's gone, so back to uh...fangirling on the interwebs, I guess! ~Thrilling~

In between bouts of sleeping off the headache, I've been checking out E3 coverage. Also watching nature documentaries, but that's not as cool as E3. So far, the convention has been kind of underwhelming - console/hardware-wise, everything announced was more of a mild upgrade over existing tech, and gaming-wise it's mostly new entries in existing franchises and extended trailers or demos for stuff that was announced earlier. But, there's still plenty to squee over!

Buckle up, y'alls, it's time to hear my thoughts on yaoi E3:

Initial PS Vita reaction: hOOOOOOOOMG LOOK AT ALL THAT POWER! oh sliders, touchpads, 3G, i guess that's nice- WAIT A SEC IS THAT LITTLE BIG PLANET HOW CAN A PORTABLE SYSTEM LOOK THIS GOOD

So yeah, I kinda like the Vita, a lot. I was thinking of upgrading my bowser of a PSP-1000 this summer, but with the Vita announcement I'm going to hold off until it's released. The 'innovative' stuff like the rear touchpad and 3D slider thingees and 3G support, are neat touches, I guess?- but honestly I don't care that much, at least not right now. I probably won't buy the model with 3G support, for that matter.

LOL at all the complaints about AT&T being the 3G provider, though.

Initial Wii U reaction: Well, that's...cute. That controller sure looks...big.

I only saw the stuff that was shown at the Nintendo press conference, which was a bunch of tech demos and previews. In terms of 'innovation' I have more slightly more faith in the touchscreen controller being more unique than the current Wiimote, as the DS touchscreen has given gamers and game developers a lot of experience with how to utilize that particular technology. That being said, touchscreen tech isn't THAT innovative and unique anymore precisely because of the DS, so I'm not like, chomping at the bit to get one.

It's nice that the Wii U will be capable of outputting to HD and apparently playing games the Xbox 360/PS3 already could, but amazingly, despite being a hardware upgrade it still looks a little behind the curve, graphics-wise. Part of Nintendo's problem in the Wii era has been its lack of 'current' tech that would allow it to run proper ports of 3rd party games released on the other consoles, so why would they develop a new console-thing that's only as powerful as the tech that was around five years ago? If MS or Sony announce a new console in the next year or two (granted, there's no indication that will happen) Nintendo will be in the same trap it's in currently.

But the games looked way fun. The Nintendo developed ones usually do. And OMG STAR FOX 3D. If there is one Nintendo franchise that could use some more shameless milking, it's frikken Star Fox. USE THE BOOST TO GET THROUGH!!1!1

As a 360 owner I can say with all confidence that the Microsoft press conference was ass. HALO GEARS KINECT KINECT KINECT SHITTY DASHBOARD REDESIGN KINECT BTW HERE'S SOME MOAAAAR HALO. ALSO: KINECT!

Dance Central 2 looks pretty cool though.

Also, Bioshock: Infinity and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim? Orgasm-inducing, baby. I watched the Bioshock trailer approximately a billion times. I WANT IT SO BADLY.

On the other hand, the Xbox Summer of Arcade looks completely, utterly awesome. All of the games sound and look fabulous but the #1 game on my list this year is Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Check it out, it looks beyond fantastic:

Some people are complaining that it looks like Patapon/Pixel Junk. Like that's somehow a bad thing.

Anyway, this is another trailer that I've watched way too many times but unlike Bioshock, this will be out this summer, maybe as early as July! ♥ And since it's an arcade title, it probably won't be more than $15, which is just icing on the cake.

Next time: squealing (and uh, anti-squealing?) about Resident Evil, Soulcalibur V and FFXIII-2. And maybe anything else that catches my eye between now and...whenever I post again.

Oh that sucks about the migraines - I hope you're feeling better by now.

And I have to say I've been a bit underwhelmed by this year's E3. Last year I was SQUEEing all over the place, but after watching the Xbox and PS3 announcements I'm just sorta meh about the whole thing.

The Vita does look awesome, and if I hadn't just bought a PSP-3000 last year I'd be all grabbyhands for it, but I'll wait for it to come out and sit on the shelves for a few years before I jump on board. PS3 has a few games that look really good, like Hitman, but I think the biggest one for me right now is thatgamecompany's Journey. It just seems so different than anything I've played that I want to try it out and get lost in the desert. I'm hoping that it'll be around $20 as it's just a PSN game.

As for the 360, OMG too much Kinect. :| You can't just shove it down our throats and expect us to go out in droves and buy it. I think if I had to chose between the Move and the Kinect I'd do the Move, but only because our place is so tiny that it would probably work better. (Oh and I like the Killzone guns they have - I think it would be fun to play a shooter game and actually hold the controller like a gun, although my bf thinks that's lame. Boo).

Those Xbox Arcade games look pretty nice, but we don't have Xbox live (I don't want to buy the adapter to connect to the internet, so we do all our online gaming through the PS3). ;|

Bioshock and Elder Scrolls? YES YES YES!!!

And I didn't really follow Nintendo at all as I don' thave a Wii and don't see that we'd ever get one, but the Wii U is sorta... odd? It's like a tablet that's a controller? Still, I can see how it would be sorta neat to interface with the tv and all that!

And did you see Ruin for the PS3? That one looks pretty awesome. But I'm just itching for Diablo3...
