★ One of the local hobby/comic shops is selling Madoka blind box figures! They're a bit pricey, but I am a weak-willed fangirl and bought two of them despite my better judgement. So now I have an itty-bitty Madoka and Homura attached to my keys. ♥ Hoping I can score a Kyubey and/or Mami the next time I stop in.
★ Blazblue Chronophantasma is in arcades now, and there's been a steady stream of gameplay and arcade storyline videos since its release. Some non-spoilery stuff worth sharing:
Bullet's Theme; Azrael's Theme; Amane Nishiki's Theme (I like all of them, but Bullet's is my favorite)
Makoto vs Amane; Bullet vs Arakune; Noel vs Azrael (I like this one because there is some CRAZY comeback action)
Relius' Astral on new characters, Bullet and Azrael's Astrals, Amane's Astral on all characters
★ Question: has anyone watched the Black Rock Shooter OAV/anime? The only Black Rock Shooter stuff I've seen is the Supercell video, and I wasn't enormously interested in the character, but the premise of the OAV and anime series sounds intriguing--like, it's about normal high-school girls who have alternate versions fighting in another world or something? I'm just curious if anyone has an opinion on whether or not to see it.
★ On that note, I've also had Mawaru Penguindrum and the Fate/stay night series on my 'to watch' list as well. Penguindrum because it's by the creator of Utena and it looks equally gorgeous and mind-trippy; Fate/stay night because...well, it's a little complicated. I want to see Fate/zero because Urobuchi wrote it, and I want to see how Fate/Zero compares to Madoka Magica and Saya no Uta. I figured I should watch Fate/stay night before Fate/Zero to get a sense of what the series is like, but I've gotten a lot of mixed information. The prevailing attitude seems to be that Fate/stay night, the anime, isn't particularly good or worth watching, and Fate/Zero can be watched and understood without having seen anything else in the canon. I've also heard the exact opposite said. :p So I dunno. Any suggestions?
Speaking of Fate/stay night, it seems to be universally accepted that the visual novel is better than the anime, and that I should just read that instead of watching the anime. I'm considering it, but truthfully, I've avoided the Type-Moon works because they seem so dense and complex and IDK, not very easy to get into quickly. I'm not sure I have the brainspace left to plough through another material-rich canon right now. :S
★ End note: A kind DW'er is holding a Depression Is A Lying Bastard Fest. From the post: It has come to my attention that it is That Time of Year again for most people with SAD in the Northern Hemisphere, and that for many other folks Bad Things and/or Anniversaries seem to be piling up. At times like this, it is hard to remember that Depression is a Lying Bastard and that it *does* get better again.
If you're feeling down for any reason at all, you can comment at the fest and hopefully find some encouragement and support to make things a little easier. ♥

Date: 2012-11-29 04:03 am (UTC)From:AHHH FATE/ZERO!! Yeah, it can can definitely be watched without understanding the canon, I managed to get through it with little confusion. You should check it out, it has the best servant-master partnership in the fate series imo, and the action-y scenes are pretty cool also!
But yeah, the adaption of Fate/Stay Night isn't too hot for all kinds of reasons, steer clear. 8|

Date: 2012-11-30 12:59 am (UTC)From:Thanks for the info--mostly, I was worried that whole classes/types/whatever aspect would be presented in a confusing way in a prequel, but if that's not an issue that's awesome.

Date: 2012-11-29 05:39 am (UTC)From:And I am a big Black Rock Shooter fan! The anime is one of my Yuletide requests this year, haha. It's definitely not a perfect series, but I liked it a lot. (If it helps you make up your mind, this series has tons of femslash subtext; love confessions and dramatic obsession and all that jazz. Like, to the point where I am still entirely convinced where at least one of the pairings is supposed to be canon. Admittedly, most of the relationships are pretty unhealthy. But still.)
But yeah, if you think it sounds like something you might enjoy, I recommend trying it out! It's a very short series.

Date: 2012-11-30 01:38 am (UTC)From:I'm 1000% on board with femslash subtext with obsessive/dark overtones. tbh one issue I have with a lot of femslash-friendly anime is that it's super-sweet and positive--which is great, but my favorite ships are the ones with some darkness and angst potential.

Date: 2012-11-29 10:51 pm (UTC)From:With regards to your questions...! IMO the F/Z anime definitely stands on its own. It might be...idk...enhanced by some F/SN knowledge? But it's definitely not a requirement.
As for F/SN, the visual novel is definitely better than the anime (and the UBW movie, which was really just fanservice and isn't very accessible to non-fans), but you're also right that Type-Moon's stuff is very...dense. Someone has a play-through up on YouTube, which might be a little easier to digest than actually playing it yourself? IDK.
Ultimately I guess I'd say to just watch the Fate/Zero anime and maybe look into the rest of the series if you're in a mind to afterward.
Oh, and re: Black Rock Shooter-- I watched the OVA and it was...alright? I haven't seen the anime, though. It made me cry mostly because some of it hit really close to home for me, hahhh.

Date: 2012-11-30 03:03 am (UTC)From:Thanks for the information--starting with Fate/Zero sounds like the best idea for now. And watching a play-through of Fate/stay night does sound less intimidating than going through the VN alone. (I tried getting into Tsukihime after a Massachusetts arcade got Melty Blood as a game, and I got overwhelmed pretty fast. And F/SN is far more sprawling than Tsukihime, so... @_@ )
My understanding of the OAV/anime is that they're basically the same story, with the anime adding more to the original plot...it sounds interesting, but the PV threw me off because it was so generic. It was like, this song/character design inspired all these stories? But weirder things have become popular, I suppose.

Date: 2012-11-30 03:26 am (UTC)From:Yeah, sometimes it's easier digest if you can just watch without having to feel like an active participant, haha. This person has all of Fate uploaded and arranged into playlists, so. (They also have a Tsukihime playthrough.)
Yeah I dunno! I've thought about watching the anime to see if I enjoy it more, but the BRS OVA was okay-but-not-great imo. Still, it can't hurt to check out.

Date: 2012-11-30 05:23 pm (UTC)From:The BRS anime gives you much more. It's basically all about the intense emotional developments among the girls. The fighting action is just bonus. More compelling than I hoped for after the kind of meh OAV! It's still a short series, so I definitely think it's worth checking out. It was really nice to see Strength and Gold Saw fleshed out more. They're great characters too.
