With regards to your questions...! IMO the F/Z anime definitely stands on its own. It might be...idk...enhanced by some F/SN knowledge? But it's definitely not a requirement.
As for F/SN, the visual novel is definitely better than the anime (and the UBW movie, which was really just fanservice and isn't very accessible to non-fans), but you're also right that Type-Moon's stuff is very...dense. Someone has a play-through up on YouTube, which might be a little easier to digest than actually playing it yourself? IDK.
Ultimately I guess I'd say to just watch the Fate/Zero anime and maybe look into the rest of the series if you're in a mind to afterward.
Oh, and re: Black Rock Shooter-- I watched the OVA and it was...alright? I haven't seen the anime, though. It made me cry mostly because some of it hit really close to home for me, hahhh.
