Some PSO2 things i think about a lot.
Varuna's origins & the Photoner Gods
The only concrete info the game gives us regarding Varuna's life as a Photoner is:
- He was one of the 20 Gods and Goddesses of the Photoners
- He and Mitra being sealed with the Profound Darkness/Shiva may have been a mistake/oversight/matter of negligence
- Varuna says he and Mitra were created for the express purpose of aiding Shiva in her rule
Since Varuna and Mitra were created, that leaves the question of who created them. Luther would be the obvious choice given their connection to Shiva; the only other named Photoner scientist is Clarissa, and erm...life creation doesn't seem like it's in her wheelhouse given what we see (though I wouldn't rule it out). The last option would be some unnamed Photoner creating them, which is kinda...underwhelming as an explanation.
But going "Oh, Luther did it" again just feels unsatisfying to me. It sort of waters down the uniqueness of the existing "Luther creations" if like, EVERYONE artificial has the same creator, if that makes sense? Especially when there had to be lots of Photoners capable of creating god-like beings--we just never learn who they are.
On the subject of god-like Photoners, the purpose of the "Photoner Gods and Goddess" is never revealed. We do know that the Photoners as a race were trying to re-create omniscience beings, but the 'pantheon' that covers Aurora/the Cosmogenic Arms/Varuna and Mitra doesn't seem to be part of that project. They don't seem to be a ruling-type class either, although I'm mostly basing this on Aurora mentioning her fear of being replaced by other women which implies the gods/goddess status was a title or status symbol that could be lost. Perhaps the title of God/Goddess was something given to Photoners who were capable of utilizing their powers in a unique way? Would explain why many of them became literal weapons upon "death."
It's possible the Photoner Gods/Goddesses were something like servants or enforcers for whatever ruling class the Photoners had--less a pantheon and something closer to the ARKS' Council of Six. I think there is some evidence that narrative connections between the Photoner Gods and the Council were planned but scrapped; things like the Council members inheriting the Cosmogenic Arms, Mitra's duplicate targets being Council members, the striking similarities between Regius and Varuna in concept design that go nowhere...
Luther/Casra I/Casra II stuff
- The original Casra is never shown on-screen, so we have no idea what he specifically looked like. Of course with both a clone and his possessed body running around we should know exactly what he looks like--except Casra II and Luther-in-Casra I's-body don't look exactly alike. They are similar, but different enough that, when Luther is first introduced in Ep. 2, most players don't make an immediate connection to Casra. So as far as appearance is concerned, which "Casra" is closest to the original? I keep vacillating between two options:
- Upon possessing Casra I, Luther altered the body to look more like his own. Altering living things is pretty well-established Photoner behavior, and also the Omega & Oracle versions of Luther look mostly the same, even though Omega Luther is theoretically Luther during the Photoner era. Of course, Omega itself is a mish-mash dream world, so I suppose what Luther looks like there doesn't necessarily have any bearing on what he actually looked like when he was a Photoner.
Anyway, this would mean that Casra II is the one most like Casra I, physically.
- In the process of creating Casra II Luther decided to alter his appearance for...reasons. My gross fujoshi brain says it's because Luther thinks with his dick all the time (though he would deny it) and decided to make his Casra clone like, SUPER HOT, so he made some...'adjustments' lol. (It's also funny since that means Luther's idea of hot is 'myself, but with softer facial features and longer legs,' which i think is extremely in-character.)
