terabient: Anime-styled profile pic that is kinda, sorta like me (Blazblue: Jin)
so have another meme while i figure out how to occupy my time in between bouts of MMO tunnel vision. it seems like a good time to engage in one of humanity's favorite pastimes: forcing musical tastes down other people's throats! that's right, it's a music meme! not only that, it's thirty days long!

or it would be if i were to post properly, which i will not, because jfc, thirty days. nobody in the world needs thirty days of meme.

so have four days scrunched into one~

day 1: your favorite song: Water Night, Eric Whitacre

Despite having sang in choruses throughout high school and college, my ability to describe music intelligently...does not exist. so here is a description of Whitacre's compositional style copypasta'd from Wikipedia:

Whitacre is probably best known for his choral works; however, both his choral and instrumental styles use his signature "Whitacre chords." These are often seventh or ninth chords, with or without suspended seconds and fourths. Perhaps his most famous chord is a root-position major triad with an added major second and/or perfect fourth. Whitacre makes frequent use of quartal, quintal and secundal harmonies, and is also known for his use of unconventional chord progressions. His use of rhythm often involves mixed, complex, and/or compound meters. His pieces sometimes include frequent meter changes and unusual rhythmic patterns.

WTF DOES ALL THAT MEAN? you may ask. honestly IDK either, but i can say that his music (especially acappella works like Water Night) is haunting, beautiful, and inimitable. The first time I heard a Whitacre song I cried, not because it was inherently sad but because it was that gorgeous.

FWIW, if you like Debussy you will probably like Whitacre.

day 2: your least favorite song: The Big M, Lust Control

Let's follow up a surreal, delicately crafted work of art with some Christians in ski masks screaming about masturbation.

Lust Control apparently formed as a joke, but their Wikipedia entry seems to contradict itself on this point, so IDK how serious this song is supposed to be. Also they were voted the worst band of the 90s which is, well, fitting.

day 3: a song that makes you happy: I Know You Know, Esperanza Spalding

Esperanza Spalding is a jazz singer/bassist. much of her music sounds very breezy and light but it's often complex and layered. I Know You Know is a perfect example: it's a sunny, joyous song that sounds as if Esperanza is just singing/playing freely, but just try singing those lyrics or tapping out that bass line (or both, as she does) and you'll realize how difficult it is!

day 4: a song that makes you sad: Home Is Where the Hatred Is, Gil Scott-Heron

This is the most depressing song about drug abuse ever written.

Stand as far away from me as you can and ask me why.
Hang on to your rosary beads,
close your eyes to watch me die.
You keep saying, kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it
God, but did you ever try
to turn your sick soul inside out
so that the world, so that the world
can watch you die?

Kanye West sampled this song in My Way Home for which I am very grateful as I probably wouldn't have discovered Gil Scott-Heron otherwise, and he is a pretty great musician.

So that's 3 great songs and one terrible one that may haunt your masturbation sessions dreams for the rest of your life. You're welcome!
