i linked to this on facebook/twitter already, but this blog post is basically the story of my life.

now in a clumsy segue, a meme:

1) Post a list of up to 20 books/movies/anime/TV shows/video games/etc.
2) Have your f-list guess your favorite character from each item. Bonus points if you can name favorite pairing, But please try to guess character first.

Mostly games because my list of movies/tv shows is pitifully small, and books aren't things i really get...fannish about. also i TOTALLY CHEATED and listed a whole bunch of Final Fantasy games separately, but 20 is a lot of things guys ;[

Battle Royale - the crazy chick, what's her name? Mitsuko? - Mitsuko is the right name ;) (i don't think the book itself is terrible, but i feel like it's really hurt by a poor translation - it's very clumsy for someone who was paid for the job. :/ )
Y! - hm... Ampersand, no wait, 355? - 355, though it was a really hard choice between her and Dr. Allison Mann.

and! you got my second faves in FFVI, FFX, and Utena which is pretty good i think! :D

Ellis isn't my favorite in L4D but given what i've written it probably does sound like he is :0

=D Damn, I did pretty damn good for random guessing (well sorta random, I went with characters I liked and characters that were somewhat popular). And yes, between 355 and Dr. Mann... Guh. Can't decide (though I'm more inclined to say 355 because of her badassery).

I'd guess Vanille for XIII but that's probably too obvious. Watchmen characters are pretty directly translated in the movie except for the HOLOL SQUIDS ARE STUPID LET'S MAKE A DUMB NEW ENDING bit for Richie McEvil and his Merry Tachyons, but no squid = apoplexy for me so I still think you are fortunate to have not seen it. Why can I suddenly not remember anyone's name from Utena except the two girls'? wtf.

Also when I was 14-16 I had these two girlfrands with whom I would geek out on anime and since we had already decided that we were ~sisters~ we ended up assigning one another characters from OMFG Megamisama. I was Urd. lol.

yeah, my fave character for Final Fantasy Fanservice is probably not surprising BUT my appreciation for Vanille's ~adorableness~ also obscures THE TRUTH.

h00ray4dolphins told me about the distinct lack of squid in the ending which is one of those things that struck me as both understandable - because 'giant squid destroying NYC' is one of those things that would be hard to make look good, even in today's super-duper-amazing-effects environment, and for the hypothetical mainstream movie-going public SUDDENLY, A SQUID is stretching suspension of disbelief or whatever, but it is a change that really messes up the ending the more you consider it.

my cousin also told me that aside from the ending, the movie's like Watchmen: Abridged and he couldn't see the point of making what was essentially a lesser version of the comic. which is actually what has kept me from seeing the movie - it'd be one thing if it was a terrible, misguided take on the comic, but if it's a by-the-panel reconstruction (which is what i gather much of the movie is) only weaker because it's impossible to transfer everything to the movie screen...why not just read the comic again? it's not because i have no attention span for movies longer than 2 hours, no.... :P

i was thisclose to picking Allison ENTIRELY based on that scene where she is protecting Rose from uhhhh that assassin i can't remember (IVY LEAGUE FENCING LESBIAN, AWWW YEAH) but ultimately i think 355's ending is just so powerful (and she kicks so much ass elsewhere) that i had to go with her. :)

Sazh was my second guess, but idk, I'm no good at this kind of thing. I'm not even going to try guessing at Utena business.

I will spare you 99.9% of the volumes I could write and have written re: the squid, but yes, it totally fucks up the ending in ways that never stop. My biggest complaint is that an unstoppable, godlike force of destruction would hardly be a catalyst for international unification and world peace. It seems more likely that having an indestructible terrorist hanging over everyone's head would inspire more panic and terror than anything. Rioting, doomsday trembling, rushes to appease him or go to ground. As I understood it, the perceived failure of an alien attack was a key element in preventing all that. The world was suddenly falsely aware of some huge, alien threat to band together against, but what would be the point if the threat weren't obviously vulnerable? Feh. And it bugged me to no end to listen to people refer to the squid as deus fucking machina, when everything from the moment the Comedian is shown weeping like a little bitch leads directly to it. And for fuck's sake, after the whole thing about the Comedian setting himself up as the Ultimate Lulz, I don't see why none of Mr. Squid's detractors appreciate the way the climax is all the more terrible for its absurdity in a very similar way. 8| squid ;;

and yeah, the sheer what the fucking fuck aspect of the squid ending is THE POINT. iirc Ozymandias' extra-long soliloquy at the end shoots down the possibility of a more traditional threat anyway because they'd been done before and didn't work. if his speech is largely unchanged in the movie he'd come off as really...dumb. :
