I write this missive on the eve of a grand undertaking. My success is almost certain, but should I fail, I must insure my tale is spared in some other way.
If you are reading this, I suspect you are seeking the reason behind my future actions – a siege upon Rouen. You are likely a citizen of that viper's nest; I once lived there, as did the lord who rescued me from my miserable existence. It is for his sake that I embark upon this endeavor.
Thirty years ago, the Evil Seed descended upon this city, dooming those it touched. The one man who could have stood against its insidious infection – he even bore the name of angels! - was cruelly exiled, but in his benevolence he never forgot you. Had capricious Fate not stolen him away, he would be your savior, not I.
I will show you the way to a new and greater world, in his absence. You may find my methods brutal and violent: rest assured, they are necessary. Albion will make sure you understand.
But first, I must tell you of the events that have brought me to this point.
I must tell you about Raphael Sorel.

Date: 2010-08-11 11:07 pm (UTC)From:-I love Amy's voice in these drabbles. Lol. I didn't see anything more than victory/loss related stuff in the game...you would think that if she gets a chance at speaking and having a storyline she would say something more meaningful. (I guess you can say that about all the characters in SCIV :( ) By her canon info she wants to stop Raphael, but she really shows like she might turn into him. The latter obviously makes more sense (take that, canon), as you pointed out...that they're not just paper vampires, like some writers (including the game's) make them to be, but some result/effects of their transformation really comes from their nature.
-Ohhh and this is probably more of a general thing, but I've noticed how all the fics after the SCIV timeline have avoided details on the ending. I'm just wondering if you had a particular reason why you did it, or could talk about the possible disaster that could ensue from something like that *nervous laugh*

Date: 2010-08-12 05:02 am (UTC)From:heh. i struggled for some time with Amy's voice - i had settled on a first-person past tense narration early on for this series but i wasn't sure when the narration would take place. at first i'd placed it during SCIII/IV when Amy is waiting for Raphael's return and reflecting on their past travels, but the voice of a 14-year-old 16th century vampiresque girl was beyond my abilities; i wanted her to be older and distanced from her story in a way only time could achieve. of course, that raised the issue of 'What happened between SC-- and now?' which i'm still working out... :p
By her canon info she wants to stop Raphael
this is true, but her reasons for doing so are hardly altruistic - she wants Raphael to come home (or come to her), the fact that she might inadvertently save the world doesn't seem to cross her mind, and if it were brought to her attention, i don't think she'd care. certainly if she were forced into choosing between Raphael and the world, she'd choose Raphael without a second thought.
some result/effects of their transformation really comes from their nature.
i like this approach a lot more then the semi-canonical idea that Soul Edge just infects and corrupts whoever it comes in contact with. Nightmare/Siegfried was far more compelling before the game played up the 'unwitting victim' angle in III/IV; the corruption of Raphael and especially Amy becomes more interesting if you assume that on some level, they had to accept its presence.
it also makes for some fun speculation as to why Raphael and Amy are very human-looking compared to other Soul Edge infected characters (aside from the obvious 'b/c vampires are popular!!1!' bit).
-i am avoiding post-SCIV details because
i haven't decided what's happened yeter...ambiguity is an underused literary trope. Yes. i r teh smrats!no subject
Date: 2010-08-15 06:05 am (UTC)From:Paragraph 3: There was a whole turn to the story after SC3 I didn't really like. Unwitting victims really don't have to feel responsible for what happened to them. It is hard to believe that Siegfried is completely innocent (like some fics make them to be--- like that painfully long SC fic about Siegfried fooling with the entire female cast, bleh. I have an urge to point out everything wrong with the last chapter which is the only chapter I think I really read) if you consider all the stuff before he even came across Soul Edge.
Did you also notice in SC3's Amy concept art that she looked nothing like a vampire despite being infected? Green eyes, red hair, etc. Raphael looked really pale in comparison, but tones down in SC4. Amy gets red eyes in 4. Like you said, nothing like Charade...

:D this brings me back...a lot of gamers I talk to don't even know pre-SC4. We are not that old!!
