I’m attending a small anime convention next weekend, which has some lolita/jfashion/alt-fashion events and panels that I’ll be checking out. I’m pretty satisfied with the gothic lolita coordinate/coord that I’ve tinkered with for a few years, so lately I’ve been thinking of getting a new JSK or skirt and work on a new style for next year’s cons. ^^
Under the cut are some of the outfits I’m considering. Only going to get one, but I’m feeling pretty good about all of these options.
I’ve been following this label for years, ever since the owner/designer posted photos of herself in a gorgeous gold OP dress and cape that she had designed and sewed herself. The currently available JSKs will be discontinued at the end of the year, so I figured now is the time to commit.
My Deer Daisy
yay!: just look at that charming, unique deer print and soothing pink/green colorway! I love all of Dollbe’s designs, but this one is especially captivating. Stylistically it straddles the line between country and sweet lolita, which is pretty far from my current gothic lolita coord.
Nah: well, b/c it’s so far from my gothic style...creating a full coord is going to be a long process and probably requires more pieces than I currently have. And yeah, I’m balking a bit at the price. It’s not the highest I’ve seen for JSKs, and for an independent label made up of two people literally sewing your dress once your order goes through, it’s more than reasonable...but I’ve never paid that much for a single piece of clothing. Trying to wrap my head around it b/c by the end of the year these designs won’t be available, but man...$300 is a lot.
Moss Maiden
yay!: This is an older design I have been longing to buy for years. The dark green and ornate white pattern is goth-adjacent, so hopefully developing a full coord with what I already have will be easier.
Nah: It’s a beautiful, elegant design, but also a bit understated when compared to other Dollbe designs. My current JSK has no print, just ruffles/bows, so I kind of want something that’s more eye-catching than this...I think.
My current JSK is from this indie Toronto designer. I love her dress silhouettes and restrained use of bows and ruffles.
Domestique
yay!: It’s a simple, classic black and white maid dress. I love (fantasy, fictional) maids. It would be fun to dress like one. The skeleton apron is goth enough to signal that this is alt-fashion maid cosplay, not ero maid cosplay. I already know my Gloomth size so no fear on that front.
Nah: Well, I already have a Gloomth dress—a black one, at that. (It’s a discontinued version of their sleeveless tea party dress.) Not that I can’t get another one, but having two black goth dresses from the same indie designer is kind of, y’know, samey? I would like to branch out with my next coord, but at the same time...this is such a beautifully simple design. A lot of alt-fashion maid cosplay outfits are drowning in bows and ruffles, which is cute but not a maid style that appeals to me.
A long-running indie Chinese label with elaborate prints and custom sizing for a lot of their clothes, which is important since my chest is too large for most Asian sizing :( The prices don’t hurt, either.
Mermaid Song
yay!: This is another print I’ve wanted for a long time, and a lot of my existing blouses and accessories should work with the red/gold colorway and the ocean theme print. Having a blouse & skirt coord for hotter days or busy con times would be nice, too.
Nah: Souffle Song has mixed reviews in terms of fulfilling orders, and appear to have very long turnaround times. Their garment quality appears to be inconsistent as well. Obviously, I don’t expect a $60 skirt to be on the same level as a $150+ dress, but spending $60 and months to get a skirt that disappoints is uh, not great.
Also, not sure if I want to go with the natural or high waist. I feel like high waist will look better given my ~fancy~ blouses don’t have too much in the way of ruffles or ornaments, but I’ve never worn a high-waist corset skirt before…
Imaginary Teahouse Skirt and Blouse
yay!: Wa lolita is the style I most want to try next; I don’t think I’ve seen anyone in the New England alt-fashion comm try it, either. Not that my knowledge of the j-fashion community is that broad, ofc. But still! Would be cool to be one of the first repping it here. Also the black blouse would work SO WELL with my other gothic pieces~
nah: Being the only person doing something is also terrifying??? I’m also not sure how this will ultimately look on my short chonky body. I’ve mostly gotten over this in cosplay/alt fashion but you know. Trying out new stuff brings up old securities, I guess. And possibly going black on both the skirt and blouse is too...the lack of contrast would be a bad idea, i guess? Most of my lolita pieces are black and sticking with the same colorway would make multiple coords easier, but I'm not sure trying to mix wa lolita pieces with other styles is uh, appropriate, i guess.
Anyway, thanks for listening to me ramble. Appreciate any comments or opinions you may have on my first world problem of “which expensive dress should I get for nerd tea parties next year.” c:
