terabient: A dancing sandwich (sandwich)
i don't know why i'm writing this late. well, i do, it's because i'm in that limbo of being really tired but also not being able to fall asleep. woe is me.

so have a jumble of shallow thoughts on animus.

Pokemon XY 37 pulled out the tried-and-true trope of an alternate/mirror world, which is basically a bulletproof trope for me--no matter how silly or poorly written a mirror world episode is, I will love it. (And it's kind of surprising that a show that's run as long as Pokemon hasn't used this trope before?!) ANYWAY, Mirror World Ash is practically a moeblob which strikes me as both hilarious and spot-on as a reversal/reflection of the shounen stock character. Like, in mirror episodes the hero's alt is usually evil in some way, but Mirror Ash spends most of his on-screen time crying and being useless to the point of pure annoyance and it's just...not something I would have expected. if the previews hadn't shown moeblob!Ash beforehand ALSO Mirror World Hawlucha was adorably useless too, and 'regular' Hawlucha nearly beat him up because of it, and it just made me love Hawlucha even more. Like, the fact that a pokemon would be so upset at its weak-ass counterpart that it would kick it in the face is kind of amazing. It's mean, but also believable and--for a show targeted at children--risky.

I am embarrassingly excited for episode 38 because, according to the previews, it has Hawlucha and Froakie getting into a fight (not a pokemon battle, but they actually argue with each other!) and features Trevenant which is one of the cooler XY pokemon. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE TUMBLR GIFS.

man though pokeani makes me so happy right now.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm having a hard time caring about Sailor Moon Crystal, and it's only the third episode. The animation is getting worse, to the point where I find it difficult to watch some scenes because the poses and facial expressions are so awkward. Story-wise, it's still extremely close to the manga...so close that there's really nothing unexpected or unique to this adaptation. I know a lot of people are happy that there's not the same amount of filler/monster of the day episodes when compared to the original anime, but...I liked those episodes! They weren't essential viewing by any means, but they had lots of cute and amusing scenes and helped enrich the character's personalities and their relationships. Sailor Moon Crystal is just hitting all the necessary plot points...with inconsistent animation quality and poorly integrated CGI.

I will probably stop following Crystal and just wait for the re-release of the original anime. Maybe I've got nostalgia goggles distorting my vision but the short dub previews fill me with far more excitement than any of the Crystal episodes have.

I still haven't watched any Dramatical Murder. WHOOPS.

In video games: I started the FFX HD remaster. I'm only at Besaid, so I don't have much in the way impressions beyond wow this is stunningly pretty and wow i forgot how much i disliked Tidus in the beginning.

Also I enjoy the remastered soundtrack, for the most part. I haven't come across a rearrangement that I've disliked yet--I know the one for Besaid had, um, a mixed reception, but I liked it a lot. The violin sounds beautiful.
