I finished all the story missions in Borderlands 2, and most of the side missions. And it only took up all most of my free time this month! Did you know that I don't have a firm grasp on the concept of priorities? It's true!
Anyway here are some thoughts.
★ Sooo my main character is the Assassin/Zer0 and I think he is PRETTY AWESOME, both in a gameplay sense (I just like cutting people's heads off while invisible OKAY) and a characterization sense. Buuuuut I can't decide if Zer0 is the biggest dork that ever dorked, or a genuine BAMF. Like, sometimes I suspect his deliciously embarrassing and forced haiku-speech and ~mysterious lone warrior shtick is all due to his origins as a total geek--a total geek who, unlike most, was able to turn dreams into reality and become an actual assassin. And then sometimes I just take his concept at face value. I can't decide which interpretation I like more. :S
★ I like most of the side missions in the game but my absolute favorite is the one where you help Mal the robot become human. I like that he calls his home 'Human Dwelling Place' and that he says things like "When I'm human I can finally stop being so good at math! Nothing is more boring than being able to multiply 8281 by 933332.454 to get 7728926051.574." I like that I had to find Mal clothes before he decided he needed human limbs, and that when I found said limbs the description informed me that left legs were utterly superfluous. I like that Mal was okay with limbs that were not whole and also that he tied them to his robot-limbs in the wrong way. Basically, EVERYTHING IN THIS MISSION WAS MAGICAL AND PERFECT.
★ Claptrap's Birthday Party was pretty depressing since no one he invited showed up. But I was more upset that even though I was in a group of four when I did the quest, apparently we didn't count as a decent party?! CLAPTRAP YOU ONLY INVITED FOUR PEOPLE IN THE FIRST PLACE. We were totally rocking that alley out! And why didn't I get an invite? Just because I'm a minion doesn't mean I don't have feelings...feelings that get hurt when my wise leader doesn't send me a personalized birthday party invitation, but makes me deliver one to the douchey arms dealer. >:|
So I dunno maybe Claptrap deserved it.
★ Also I laughed really hard at "Stairs? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and Claptrap's subsequent list of weaknesses. Then he cloaked himself so I wouldn't hear him crying but I heard him anyway and I laughed even more, which maybe makes me a terrible person but whatever.
★ On a more serious note, holy shit what happened to Bloodwing was horrible and I felt bad about it for days. Something about the way she died and Mordecai's reaction hit a nerve. It's one part of the game I don't really want to see again, but I will probably have to see it a lot. :(
★ I like the way the game handles a lot of, hmmm, I guess it would be social issues? I like that Hammerlock is gay and the way you find out about it is through a few throwaway lines in one of the side missions he gives you. Nobody comments on it or makes jokes about it, it's just a fact that is stated without fanfare. I like that Ellie isn't mocked for her weight (except by bandits, who are supposed to be assholes) and that Moxxi isn't shamed for being promiscuous. They are little things, to be sure, but it's nice to see that Borderlands doesn't always go for the LCD when it comes to humor.
★ THINGS I DID NOT LIKE: Roland being killed in the weakest, most unnecessary way possible. Lilith's line "Better dead than a damsel" was pretty badass, as was her reaction to Jack's torture (rage instead of tears!) but it couldn't help but remind me that all the Sirens have been exploited/captured for the use of terrible men at some point. :c
★ THINGS I DID LIKE: PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING
I am not sure what to do next! I really love Zer0 (seriously I'm thisclose to writing some godawful pretentious character study fic and/or fic where he sleeps with everyone; I ALREADY REGRET EVERYTHING) and I might just start True Vault Hunter mode despite having no friends at my level. :x But I also like Maya, who is still really far behind in the game (although overlevelled for where's she at, story-wise) and I have a level 9 Axton that I started a few nights ago...I should probably work on one/both of them now. But I get discouraged by the crappy stuff that drops and that the first part of the game is pretty easy. Stuff will get better later on, I know, but I'm impatient and want things to be hard NAO. >:

and he totally should've just respawned 8CHowever I'm the worst person and found Bloodwing's death kinda funny, mostly because I had genuinely forgotten that 'explosive' was an element and it only dawned on me what was missing seconds before she died. I was expecting her to start shooting rockets or something. |D
I like how homosexuality isn't a big thing on Pandora in general. I mean, one of Jack's "researchers" has a wife, and they're experimenting on a dude who begs them to not hurt his husband. I was kinda surprised by that, but I guess somewhere like Pandora isn't really the place to care about what other people are doing. vOv

Date: 2013-01-22 03:05 am (UTC)From:Ugh I hated everything about it. A single pistol shot to the back? REALLY? And his death doesn't really serve a narrative purpose: Handsome Jack has already done so much horrific stuff that killing a good guy doesn't have much impact. Nobody gives a fuck about people being murdered on Pandora anyway, and as a player you're probably conditioned to that attitude by then, so any drama that might come from seeing someone with character development bite it is lessened to the point of not even registering. Plus Roland is one of the only characters with any sort of moral code and losing him just seems like a bad move in general because I can't really see any of the current Vault Hunters, or the original cast, taking up his role. :/ (I DIDN'T REALIZE I HAD SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS WOW)
I don't know why but the fact that Bloodwing's head exploded but the rest of her body was untouched really freaked me out. If she'd just blown up completely and not left a body I probably wouldn't have such a strong reaction, but seeing her without a head was just the worst. ;_;
