SO. i've been house-bound FAR more than i'd like this month (lingering illness + TWO furloughs a month = unnecessary free time :| ) which means lots of video game playing to distract from my dwindling finances!
SPOILERS FREAKIN EVERYWHERE (though, considering the questionable quality of these games, i doubt anyone cares...? LULZ.)
i think i'm nearing the end of Soulcalibur Legends. just finished the part where Siegfried beats up, um, i guess himself, or possibly Soul Edge, tempting him to eeeebil. THE METAPHYSICS, THEY ARE NOT EXACTLY CLEAR. anyway he's pretty much set on sealing away Soul Edge now, so i guess that's what i have to do next! pretty sure a gratuitous Nightmare cameo/fight is on its way, even though he (it?) shouldn't exist yet.
while the gameplay is still HIDEOUSLY BORING, and the fact that Siegfried apparently knows the true nature of Soul Edge this early is problematic (huge understatement) for what occurs in SCI, i AM giddy that the fanon about Siegfried targeting the Crusaders as a form of passive-aggressive rebellion against his father is actually canon! assuming SC:L *is* canon, which is debatable, and that the shadow thing he beats the crap out of is like, a manifistation of his unspoken desires and not just Soul Edge being a dick.
still can't get over Jailbait!Sieg either. especially since the game is obviously running the SCIII graphics engine, so Siegfried within the playable missions looks decently old, but in the cutscenes: SUCH a baby! AND HE IS TRYING SO HARD TO LOOK TOUGH. the japanese box art is a perfect example, where, even with an intimidating (LOL NO) frown in place, he is clearly the prettiest princess of the group. ♥ ♥ ♥
which reminds me, i should probably screen-cap some of the in-game art while i'm still playing it, as there's no way i'm playing this once i beat it and i can't find the art uploaded anywhere. :(

and now, an FFIV: The After update~
OH GOD THIS GAME IS GODDAMN TERRIBLE.
well, the actual playing is kind of fun. it's basically FFIV + combination attacks, like Chrono Trigger, which is awesome! too bad half of the characters are boring, because they're just kid versions of older characters, and so i don't really care about what they can do with the established roster. AHAHAH.
ANYWAY. the story is essentially FFIV, but 17 years later, so Porom can wear a see-thru nightgown for a uniform. Example chapter: Edward has to find the Sand Ruby for a friend, who's sick with Desert Fever...just like in FFIV! then, in a moment of self-loathing and crisis, he's visited by...Anna, just like in FFIV! (ok, this time Tellah is with her, but still.) Kain is STILL 'battling his dark side,' pining over Rosa - who, by the way, is the only female buried in clothing solely because she's pushing 40 - and switching sides at the drop of the hat. dear Kain: in FFIV, your angst was...understandable, even touching at times. 17 years later? it's just annoying.
so basically, it's FFIV: Look, Rydia's in a bathing suit!
The next installment is coming in September, but i'm not sure i want to buy it. tough economic times, and all.
...oh who am i kidding. i am going to suffer through this just like i'm going to suffer through the rest of SC:L, and for the same reasons: NERD-DRIVEN ADDICTION.
i really ought to play a GOOD game after all this fail. suggestions?

Date: 2009-08-19 04:22 am (UTC)From:And damn, I was so looking forward to FFIV: TA; I was giddy as a schoolgirl when I read that it was being ported way back when. Of course, I hadn't heard too much about the gameplay, just that one of my favorite games of all time was getting a sequel and so SQUEE.
If it sucks, though, I'm glad I haven't picked up my Wii remote in quite a while.
(...of course, I'm sure I'll be tempted back at some point by the promise of more Edge. I'm probably the only FFIV fan in existence whose favorite character is Edge.)

Date: 2009-08-20 03:16 am (UTC)From:well, the characterization is alright, for the most part. the most annoying aspect HAS to be the recycling of the FFIV plot - you end up fighting pretty much every major boss from FFIV, in circumstances that are almost identical to the original game. i mean...Yang's daughter is attacked by bombs on Mount Fabul while training, Ceodore (GUESS WHO'S KID THIS IS) and Kain are attacked by *mysterious monsters* while returning to Baron via airship, Edward doesn't fight the Dark Elf, but Palom does...URGH.
also, every chapter ends with your party coming up against UBERSUPERVILLAN of LITTLE CHARACTERIZATION and getting badly defeated, OR you defeat her but she does that really annoying *OHSHI PLOT TWIST!* where she wins ANYWAY.
Edge and Rydia have relatively unique chapters. Edge's is full of NINJAS AND SEEKRITS! unfortunately, after you download the first pack of base chapters (there's 3) you need to download every subsequent chapter separately, and at $3 each they start to add up if you're getting ALL of them. x_x
re: fav characters: I KNO RITE? it's like, 95% of FFIV fans like either Kain or Rydia, and the leftovers probably like Cecil and/or Rosa. (guilty here XD ) and though i wouldn't say he's my favorite, i like Edward a lot - man, THAT is a lonely fanboat to be rowing. :(

Date: 2009-08-21 07:23 pm (UTC)From:(Don't get me wrong, FFIV is one of my favorite games of all time, but I'm in the middle of a full DS replay and certain bosses [coughRubicantecough] are getting on my nerves again.)
Aw, I like Edward; I've always thought he was a nice departure from all the heroics of the rest of the team. I mean, here's a guy who's flawed, who's a serious coward, really, and yet he still manages to pluck up enough courage to fight. I admire that.
The one character I've never understood all the love for is Kain. "I'm evil! I'm good! I'm good...but not really! Oh look, I'm brainwashed again! Who saw that coming?" A lot of it is probably my very low tolerance for characters with out-of-control angst levels, but...yeah. Give me arrogant ambidextrous ninja princes any day.
