problematic faves (JUST KIDDING, they're alright)
was kinda tagged by a tumblr pal with this meme:
List 10 favourite characters (1 per series/fandom) and then tag 10 people
1. Persona 4: well, right now it’s Protagonist/Yu Narukami, because I have a soft spot for spacey dorks that ~love everyone~ in a possibly slutty way, and I like the contrast of his friendly, accepting personality and reserved exterior. But Rise Kujikawa was my first P4 love, because she’s super-cute, self-aware, more insightful than most people give her credit for, and has A+ taste in girlfriends (smart, shy, and cute blue-haired girls–she’s totally got a type. ;) I guess if I have to choose between the two of them, I’ll go with Yu Narukami…for now.
2. Resonance of Fate: Leanne/Reanbell. Umm, I want say more than ‘she’s really cool, she shoots guns well and stylishly and she’s pretty’ but I’m blanking at the moment–NO WAIT, I’m over it. What I like most about Leanne is her will–she’s not the strongest, or the smartest, and often, her options in a given situation are limited, but once she’s made a decision she will do anything to see it through. More generally, I like that she’s an action heroine who’s pretty chill. She’s not overwhelmingly ‘tough’ or ‘hard’ and she’s not excessively nice or subservient. Most of the time, she’s just trying to do a good job and enjoy herself too.
3. Blazblue: Arakune. I enjoy his self-destructive backstory, (man obsessed with knowledge–and possibly proving himself to, or surpassing, his superior, Kokonoe?–ends up destroying himself) and that his current form is a big weird blob of trash, bugs, body parts, and black goo, all topped off with a simplistic mask that’s supposed to convey his emotions to others because he can’t speak. I also enjoy his fighting style, which is mostly COVER THE SCREEN IN BUGS, with a little bit of floating around, whacking people with bones.
4. Borderlands: Claptrap. I’m just really impressed that this dumb boxy robot can inspire so many conflicting emotions. Like, am I laughing because he’s funny, or because he’s so unfunny that I am laughing to keep from crying in frustration? I feel sorry for him but also, he kind of deserves it because he’s kind of an asshole?? He’s a big yellow box on a wheel and his arms are just skinny metal sticks and wires with clumsy metal clasps for hands but he’s cute, somehow??? Is…is this what turning into a puddle of feels is like????
Also, Laser Inferno is the hype…est (shut up, that’s totally a word) skill I’ve ever experienced, in any game. Every time the disco ball drops, the techno track starts, and the lasers go off, I AM READY TO WRECK SHIT. SO READY. SO HYPE.
5. Left 4 Dead: Louis. Look, someone needs to be the unironic positive voice in the apocalypse, and Louis is really good at it, if not especially convincing. I aspire to be as sunny and optimistic as Louis in the face of things not nearly as terrifying as zombies eating my face. Also he is attractive and looks good in a dress shirt and slacks, and he has a nice voice and I’d be okay with repopulating the earth with him if it came to that. You know, if he were real, and the zombie apocalypse were also real.
6: Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Madoka, because hey did you notice that there’s a trend of shy, quiet, and extremely optimistic characters here? She’s also gives of that whole ‘o-oh i’m just realizing i love girls’ vibe which is appealing even if it’s obvious fan bait, and I like the color pink. Look, my fondness for Madoka is mostly shallow, I admit it.
7. Azumanga Daioh!: Osaka. As mentioned earlier, I have a soft spot for spacey characters (probably because I space out…a lot) and I think her scenes are the funniest in both the manga and anime. And it’s kind of nice to see a student who’s not particularly good at anything manage to succeed–moderately, I mean; at least she was able to graduate from high school. X)
8. Final Fantasy VI: Terra Branford. When I first played the game as a wee girl I liked her because she had a cool sprite with green hair and set things on fire. As a nominally more sophisticated adult, I like Terra because she’s cute, sometimes has green hair, sets things on fire, and when she discovers the true meaning of love, she regains her eldritch beastly form (kids love it!) and decides to kill the guy who destroyed the world. That’s a pretty sweet character arc.
9. Persona 3: Protagonist/Minato Arisato, though mostly from the movie characterization. I like that he’s disconnected, but doesn’t go out of his way to push people away–he’s rude, yeah, but he’s not cruel. And yeah, it’s a cliche for an apathetic exterior to mask a squishy, sensitive heart, but it’s one of my favorites, SO THERE. I especially like the implication that for Minato, there is no moderation in the number of fucks given: either he gives no fucks, or gives literally all the fucks in the world. He is simultaneously ‘I don’t care’ and ‘oh, guess it’s time to literally be the Messiah, I love you and everyone in the Universe.’ Also, it’s probably canon that he fucks both a robot and an avatar of Death, that’s like, living the dream right there. Erebus might take Minato’s life…but it can never take away his swag. Oh, and he’s super adorable, but nearly everyone on this list is super adorable in one way or another, so that goes without saying.
10. Resident Evil: Chris Redfield. I don’t care if punching a boulder to save your friend from a half-man, half tentacle beast while in an active volcano is ‘unrealistic’, that is hands-down my favorite moment in the Resident Evil series, and frankly one of my favorite moments in any game I’ve played, period. Disregarding the only worthwhile use of the Quick-Time Events, I’ve always preferred Chris’ routes in the original game, Code Veronica, and the ~eh, who cares Resident Evil 6; they’re just….more fun. I don’t really play Resident Evil to scare myself, I play Resident Evil to beat up weird shit in inexplicable places with terrible dialog playing over the whole thing. That is the quintessential RE experience.
