drabble: Matters of the Heart [FFIV]
Title: Matters of the Heart
Fandom: FFIV
Pairing: Edge/Rydia
Rating: G
Words: 275
A/N: have had this lying around since
ff_fortnightly's prompt of "Bad Romance Cliches," but i was utterly unable to cut this down to 200 words, also i am terrible at writing anything light-hearted. :( further inspiration: Squeenix's hilarious attempts at depicting chocobos as serious steeds. dear Squeenix - chocobos are inherently funny, and no number of FMVs with war chocobos is going to change that. ♥
ANYWAY. Post-game: Edge pays Rydia a visit. It does not go as planned.
---
Edge slips through Mist silently, making his way to Rydia's house unnoticed. This is harder than he initially thought: though subterfuge comes to an Eblanese ninja as easily as breathing, walking about in broad daylight while wearing a full suit of ceremonial armor and carrying an enormous bouquet of flowers makes discretion...difficult. Despite this, Edge manages to reach Rydia's doorstep without drawing the attention of Mist's inhabitants - and more importantly, Rydia herself.
Edge knocks on the door, hiding the bouquet behind him. The door flies open with unexpected speed, whacking Edge on his forehead.
"Sorry! I'm a bit of a rush..." Rydia looks up at her visitor, recognition dawning in her eyes. "Oh, Edge! What are you doing here?"
Not exactly the greeting Edge has been hoping for, but - no matter. "Rydia," Edge says, flashing his most winning smile, "You look absolutely stunning!"
Blink. Blink. "What?"
Edge refuses to let Rydia's lack of enthusiasm dampen his own. "I have a gift for you," he says without missing a beat, pulling out the bouquet with a flourish. "This evening -"
"WARK."
The gallant chocobo Edge has ridden to Mist trots over, stuffs its beak into the sweet-scented flowers, and eagerly devours them.
"Oh, what a cute chocobo!" Rydia reaches out to pet the chocobo, eliciting a happy kweh! in response. "How did you know Mist was in need of pack animals, Edge? Thank you so much!"
It occurs to Edge that a girl raised in the Feymarch might be unfamiliar with the rules of courtship.
"I hope it doesn't need to eat such expensive food, though..."
Edge sighs. "...Don't worry about it, Rydia."
