FUCKING RABBITS!!! >E

Went on a walk with Mama this afternoon, and we saw so many goddamn rabbits. Had to have been at least twenty, though some might have been doubles (since we walked for a while and then back again). Just so many. UGH.

Really need them eradicated but of course it's difficult what with trapping being illegal (too high risk of getting something similarly-sized but native), and it being too goddamn dangerous to shoot them in this particular patch of parkland. I feel like an obvious solution is live-trapping and letting go anything other than ferals, but then you've got the problem of what to do with all the corpses, which given selling wild-harvested meat is also illegal is... difficult... SIGH.

Anyway it sucks. I should definitely look into it more though, might be something I can get involved in maybe??? Dunno. Have put it on the to-do list, but not right now I need to go to bed.

Between that and the fact I really needed to shower since I'm meeting A tomorrow, I only got one line done on the blanket, but that's still better than nothing! >: It's another max length line, too! Got another two chalked out, too, and it's still not quite at the point of getting smaller, but SOON. Yes. >:

FFA DW Post #2373- One container, two container, three container, DICK (or: bulbous bow dickboat)

Obviously, the character's personal Suez Canal was wide, wide open... and then the Ever Given attacked.

The Ever Given touched a set of coordinates inside Suez that had never been touched before.
“Oh” Suez said, clenching down and trapping Ever inside him. ”Oh!”

Max! Length!!!

Yeah, I hit max length with the quilting today! \o/ Gonna be a few more rows of that, but goddamnit, it can't get any longer and that's excellent! :D :D :D

Almost out of varigated thread, too; done with all the stuff that I bought, so I've just got... well technically four more threads, but I've only got a tiny bit left of one since I used most of it today, so it's more like three. May or may not get finished with them tomorrow! :O :O :O Then to solids, yes. I have. Many many solids to get through hahahaha. No chance I'll use everything up with this project, nope.

Other than that, pretty quiet day. Did some cleaning of various routine types. No work on the chook run thing, due to weather again.

Aaaand brain is going splat so it is CLEARLY past time to go the fuck to sleep, soooo I'mma do. Yes.

Recent Reading: Private Rites

Last night I wrapped up another Julia Armfield novel, Private Rites. This novel is about three estranged sisters who are pushed back together when their father dies.

Very sorry I can't give this one a higher rating (I gave it a 3.25 on StoryGraph), because I loved the last Armfield novel I read, Our Wives Under the Sea, and this book shares a lot of similarities with that one. Our Wives Under the Sea was a meditative, slow-paced exploration of an evolving grief which hit me quite hard, but Private Rites comes off, if I can be excused for phrasing it this way, like it's trying too hard. Private Rites obviously really wants the reader to think it's Deep and Thoughtful and Literary, and it shows this desire too clearly for it to work, for me.

What does succeed in Private Rites is the frustrating and heart-breaking portrayal of three estranged sisters struggling with the legacy of a complicated and toxic father. Isla, Irene, and Agnes are not particularly likeable people, and even they muse over whether this can be tied to their strange and un-childlike childhood, or if it's just natural to them. Armfield so captures the feeling of being trapped at a certain age around family, the notion that they are locked into their view of you at ten or thirteen or seventeen and never update that view to reflect who you are as an adult and how you may subconciously regress to fit that view around them. She also catches the frustrating feeling of knowing you are reacting irrationally to a sibling and not being able to stop yourself and how much emotional history undergirds these seemingly outsized responses.

The slow apocalypse happening in the background of the story feels like it ties in well with the emotional state of the three protagonists; a drowning of the world that takes place a little at a time over many years until things become unlivable.

However, as mentioned above, the book ultimately does not succeed to me at being engaging. It is incredibly introspective in a way that comes off as navel-gazing. The "City" portions of the chapters felt especially like Armfield begging us to find the novel artistic and creative, which was unnecessary, because there's plenty here to stand on its own.

The ending also felt like a complete non-sequitur. The seeds for it were sown throughout the book, but not prominently enough that I cared when it came about. Instead, I felt cheated out of an emotional denouement among the three sisters, which is cast off in a coup by this last-minute, poorly-explained plot point.

I also felt like Isla gets an unfair share of grief, and it wasn't clear why she among the three of them was singled out to be exclusively miserable.

Do love the queer representation here; Armfield continues to excel in that.

On the whole, there is a lot of good meat here and it approaches grief from a completely different angle from Our Wives Under the Sea so that it doesn't feel at all repetitive if you've read that one, but it also drags more and I found the ending unsatisfying.

Room cleaning?? What??

Soooo since we have Window Guys coming to give a quote next week, Mama's had a bee in her bonnet about cleaning my room up. Which is. Um. Possibly fair. >>;;;

Anyway, since my father was using the area we're making the chook run thing in to varnish some stuff today (which is important too, we're not at all mad about it), she got me to tackle that instead. Which. Bleh. But! She helped, and by helped I mean folded my washing and found stuff and did all the vacuuming so yeah, really helping! Which was nice. And I managed to at least put some stuff properly away, though I should. Really work on that more. Yes.

And now my floor is very clear and clean, which is nice! It's not gonna last but it's nice! (T-minus something something until Sushi plays gravity with stuff on... probably my display cabinet again. But maybe the bookshelves.)

Other than that, I did three more rows of quilting! Whee! Probably two more until max length? Hard to say for sure until I draw the lines, but it'll probably be tomorrow! :O Am hype!!!

Meds get! With perfect timing!

In a true strike of fate, I got my health care card this morning! When I had to go to the doctor to get my new meds script! \o/ This means the doctor's visit is free! (Otherwise you pay up front and get a certain amount back, which is a) annoying, and b) still requires you to pay extra money, bleh.)

It ALSO means my meds are cheaper, not that they were breaking the bank as it was since they're generic and also our medical system is halfway decent. But still, is nice!

Anyway, did that, and then got a BUNCH of snacks at the supermarket - I've been utterly out for over a week, it's been sadtimes for me - and then came home and just passed the fuck out. Sigh. Not that we'd've been able to work on the chook run thing anyway, given the weather - it wasn't raining excessively, but enough that everything would be wet and slippery and someone (likely me) would end up injuring themselves.

I did another couple of lines on my quilting project, too. Only two, but they're getting so goddamn long that that took like four hours orz orz orz. Still not max length! Soon though. Soon. And then they'll get smaller again!

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.
